Outsourcing for teachers?

This weekend I'm reading Tim Ferriss's book The 4-Hour Workweek, which describes a process of eliminating unnecessary tasks, automating essential tasks, and outsourcing most of the rest. It's not exactly geared towards teachers, but the author does raise many interesting points. One of them is the possibility of outsourcing (usually to a highly-educated but low-cost overseas company or concierge) and how it can be used for personal and professional advantage.

Ferriss says that the kinds of tasks which should be outsourced are those which are 1) time-consuming and 2) well-defined. Most teachers make around $20 per hour, and finding someone who can take some of that work and do it for $5-$15 an hour could be a big help to overworked instructors and administrators. Which teacher activities fall into both of the categories Ferriss outlines AND can ethically be performed by non-teachers?

Grading is probably out, as is contacting parents (unless it was sending them a form letter, which is a task better automated than outsourced). Researching background for new lessons is one possible use of a personal assistant, as is offering homework help (some families are already paying helpers in India and elsewhere for homework assistance). What else?

  1. Hi,

Outsourcing teaching can be another story although what makes this interesting is applying "taking turns" between a country from another country. Many other teachers nowadays have been brought in different countries just for these opportunities of having best teachers around Asia for example to teach in the US. Certainly, US can pay lower costs but can still receive higher application of service.

    That's my opinion.

    Jason.
